Winemakers Paul Scotto and Mitch Cosentino both agree wholeheartedly that before the first grape is brought to the winery 80% to 90% of the eventual wine's merit has been determined in the vineyard as it is the ultimate contributor to a wine's excellence. For J. McClelland Cellars only the finest Napa Valley vineyards are chosen based on their history of wines produced plus the meticulous attention paid to the soil and each vine.
Paul's overriding philosophy is "patience and letting the vineyard tell me what to do." And Mitch adds that "A visual inspection is important but tasting wines produced from the site, with a conscientious effort to separate winemaking influences, is paramount to determining the character of the vineyard."

Winemaker Paul Scotto refers to the 2015 JMC Chardonnay as, "Shaped like an inverted pear that starts out round and finishes crisp with lemon zest." A great mind picture to describe this very "modern Chablis-like" Chardonnay from Napa Valley's highly regarded Simone Vineyard with its elegant lime and apple nose accented by just a hint of tropical fruit. The palate is rich and full exhibiting pristine balance between fruit, oak and acidity as it leads to a long, bright, crisp finish bringing all of the aromatic and flavor elements together while lingering on and leaving us wanting another sip.
The fruit for our 2014 Chardonnay was grown in the Oak Knoll District located near the southern end of Napa Valley. Our combination of 50% whole cluster press, 30% barrel fermentation and 12 months in a combination of new and used French oak lends a true Burgundian character to the finished wine. The palate is crisp yet subtle with lively acidity and notes of pear, apple, quince and citrus complementing dynamic minerality leading to a long clean finish.
Hand harvested from the Oak Knoll District and whole cluster pressed immediately upon arrival at the winery. Stainless steel fermentation partially finished in French oak Burgundy barrels. Nine months of barrel aging enhanced the brightness, character and elegance of the fruit. Subtle, complex notes of citrus, melons, pineapple, mangoes and minerals. Full bodied and well balanced to enhance a broad range of cuisine; will continue to develop for several years.

Napa Valley's 2014 vintage was classic in its character bringing us wines that highlight the elegance of 2012 with the power of 2013. JMC's 2014 Merlot follows a very traditional Right Bank Bordeaux model in both style and blend with 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc. The color is a bright ruby with a touch of amber emphasizing its depth. On the nose you will discover red cherry with accents of dried rose petals and hints of lilac and spice. Your first sip will introduce you to an elegant mouthfeel framed by finely grained tannins and bright acidity to offer both structure and balance while leading to an intriguing finish that reflects all the sensory impressions from the nose, palate and its Right Bank heritage.
Our 2013 Merlot from Napa Valley's Oak Knoll District is a perfect example of this stellar vintage. It displays all the elegance of our award winning 2012 with a bit more power, concentration and depth. The aromatics are filled with black rose and mineral elements accented by just a touch of new French oak. The palate is full and rich with notes of black cherry, blueberry, pepper and currant leading to a long complex finish with beautifully structured tannin and a multi-layered impression of all that went before.
Hand harvested from the Silverado Trail and tank fermented for three weeks. Aged in French oak for 24 months with just one barrel to barrel racking. Full bodied flavors and aromas of black cherry, plum, cardamom spice and hints of black rose. Outstanding character and complexity reminiscent of fine Pomerol. Rich, ripe tannins, well layered with a long finish. This release will evolve for many years.

Our 2014 JMC Cabernet Sauvignon is an intricate blending of fruit from a few select Napa Valley vineyards Winemaker Mitch Cosentino has been using in crafting award-winning wines for many years. It is a robust yet elegant wine that captures your senses as it continues to evolve in the glass revealing layered complexity and "surprises" around each corner. The nose is redolent with blue and black fruit that continue on to the palate as welcome notes of red berries and spice suddenly appear. The tannins are sweet and structured to frame not only the rich mouthfeel but the elegant bright finish as well.
From a stellar Napa Valley vintage, our 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon shows great breed with richly concentrated notes of black current and a touch of black pepper on the nose. This is a full-bodied Cab blended with 11% Merlot and 7% Petite Verdot for added complexity. The palate exhibits a complex and layered black fruit flavor profile accented by a touch of red berries with a lush mouthfeel and firm tannins that lead on to a long and layered finish. This is a wine that will pair well with a variety of beef preparations and literally screams for a charred rare steak.
Hand harvested from the Oak Knoll District between October 3-12. Each lot was separately de-stemmed into stainless steel fermentation tanks, followed by 20-24 months of barrel aging. The Cabernet Sauvignon was fined with fresh egg whites. Deeply colored and well balanced with an elegant body and flavors of rich cassis, black fruit and subtle oak spice. Firm, ripe tannins enhance the depth and complexity and support a long finish. Ready to enjoy but will continue to develop through 2020.
Our 2014 J. McClelland Cellars Petit Verdot is the second vintage of this often overlooked varietal and from the same Oak Knoll vineyard responsible for our multiple award winning 2013 offering. Visually, the color displays a very deep ruby hue accompanied by an intriguing translucent quality. The nose expresses great depth and complexity and notes of black berries accented with a touch of cranberry and earthy tones displaying the classic rusticity of the grape. A mouth-filling palate is a seamless continuation of the bold but elegant character of the nose displaying black fruit, sweet red plum and truffle, continuing the expression of rusticity from the nose on to the long layered finish framed by richly structured tannins. A great pairing with a host of delightful grilled meat dishes and perfect for all those special fall and winter culinary events on the horizon.
Hand harvested October 8 in the oak knoll district. Each lot was fermented separately, de-stemmed into stainless steel for fermentation, fined with fresh egg whites and barrel aged for 26 months in French oak. The deep, intense ruby color is characteristic of cooler climate Petit Verdot. Full bodied, polished and expansive on the palate with currant and spice flavors and a long, flavorful finish.
Winemakers Paul Scotto and Mitch Cosentino oversaw the hand-harvesting for our 2013 Malbec then chose stainless steel fermentation to preserve freshness. After fermentation was complete, the wine was transferred to a mix of new and older French oak for extended barrel aging. The color is a deep crimson with a welcome tone of brightness on the edge. Wild red berries and cranberry come forward on the nose coupled with notes of Asian spice and earth that leads to a bold palate impression filled with a panoply of red and black berries accented by earthy notes. A rich mouthfeel, structured tannins and youthful acidity round out the mid-palate while ushering in a layered finish showing sweet berry flavors with a touch of red plum and spice.
Sold Out, Sorry.
Hand harvested from one of the state’s oldest and most revered Charbono vineyards in Calistoga. Fermented in stainless steel for two weeks and barreled primarily in older oak for two years with minimal racking. Robust and full bodied with ripe flavors of blueberries, blackberries, plums and exotic spices. The tannins are firm but proportionate for balance, structure, mouthfeel and finish.
